Our Battle Continues

Bee Savers Malta has been campaiging and working on preserving the Maltese Bee

who are we?

We’re the Bee Savers Malta

From more than 10 years, we’ve been leading the way across Malta — creating the best possible environment and campaigns to preserve the Maltese Bee.  Since 2014.

What do we do?

Things we've Done.

Swarms of Bees Saved

Thousands of bees have been saved from getting removed. The bees are relocated from urban environments to more nature ones.

Collaboration with Farmers

We've collaborated with several farmers to house the captured swarms of Bees.

Awareness Activities

Multiple Campaigns, TV and Newspapers interviews plus awareness trials in the Schools.

Our journey began with a mission to intercept and redirect urban swarms of bees back into the wild. This initiative was not merely about relocating bees but also served as a platform for disseminating vital knowledge about their ecological importance and engaging the public in educational activities to promote awareness.

Through a hands-on and dedicated approach, countless bee colonies were rescued from imminent destruction. These efforts revealed a significant discovery: the Ruttneri strain of bees, a unique and highly specialized species, is far rarer than previously believed. Experts now suggest it may be approaching "Vulnerable" (VU) status on the conservation spectrum, highlighting the critical importance of our work.

However, our findings also unveiled a more widespread concern. Even established wild bee populations, which once thrived in natural habitats, were increasingly struggling to survive. This was largely due to the combined effects of prolonged droughts and a dramatic reduction in available foraging areas, both of which have placed immense pressure on their survival.

To ensure the long-term conservation of bees, it became clear that efforts must extend beyond saving individual colonies. It requires a broader, holistic strategy to restore and enhance the macroclimate. This means focusing on expanding and protecting areas where bees can forage and thrive. By prioritizing the significant increase of these spaces, we aim to create a sustainable environment where bees can flourish naturally.

This vision has guided our work from the very beginning, and it remains the cornerstone of our commitment to conserving these vital pollinators and ensuring their role in maintaining ecological balance for generations to come.
